How to: Best practice tips for your Ruka human hair extensionsđŸ€©đŸ’«Updated 6 months ago

To ensure they maintain their luster and quality, we've put together our most important tips and tricks to keeping your Ruka Hair extensions looking and feeling their bestđŸ’đŸŸâ€â™€ïžđŸ©·

1. Styling Products for Hydration

Treat your extensions like your natural hair by using styling products that nourish without weighing them down. Always mist generously with water if you plan on detangling your extensions and opt for serums (like our Save Me serum), leave-in sprays/creams, and/or a hydrating mousse to add slip and keep them looking and feeling healthy and vibrant when installed.

2. Washing, Conditioning, and Detangling

Your hair extensions wash routine is a key contributor to maintaining their freshness and overall quality, so you'll want to wash, condition, and detangle them as often as necessary. Some individuals prefer doing this after each install, others will wash their extensions whilst installed but this frequency and method will vary based on the style you have, personal preference and usage. Ensure to hydrate and nourish the extensions after washing and during your install (as and when you feel needed) to compliment keeping them looking their best.

3. Protection from Heat ToolsIf you plan to style your extensions with any heat tools (this includes blow dryers, flatirons/straighteners, curling wands, diffusers) always use a heat protectant spray. This will work to shield the hair from irreversible heat damage, and preserve the quality for longer.

4. Proper Storage Matters

When not in use, always store your extensions in the best possible way to prevent tangling and maintain moisture. Consider keeping them together in a satin pillowcase or satin bag; this will help to reduce tangling and minimise moisture loss. At night if you're sleeping in your extensions, use a satin bonnet, scarf, or even pillowcase to protect them from unnecessary tangling, shedding and drying out.

Additional Tips

Dyeing at home: When it comes to permanently altering the colour of your extensions, since any dyeing you do undertake is at your own risk we advice making sure to set a timer for the processing time and to check the extensions regularly during this time and rinse them out as soon as you think you've achieved the level of lifting that you want. Following up with a deep conditioner treatment or bond repair conditioner to seal in some nourishment and ensure the extensions are handled with the best possible aftercare after going through the dyeing process.

Professional Assistance: Consider seeking advice from a professional stylist experienced in handling extensions for dyeing advice and personalised care and maintenance routines based on your chosen hairstyle. And remember, with the right care and attention, your Ruka extensions can provide you with 1-2 years of usage.

Gentle Handling: Treat your extensions gently and with care. Avoid detangling when completely dry and free of product, as well as any harsh brushing or pulling to prevent unnecessary breakage and increased shedding.

Avoid Overwashing: While cleanliness is important, excessive washing might strip the extensions of natural oils, leading to dryness and matting. Tying your extensions up when working out/covering them at night will help your wash days go further.
